What You Will Learn
Interested in making VR but don't know where to start? Well this one's for you! In this workshop, we'll build a VR environment from scratch in Unity 3D using assets from the Unity Store. This workshop is suitable for those with basic Unity familiarity, as well as more experienced Unity developers looking to learn how to create a VR project. If your skills are a bit rusty or you're a total Unity newb that's okay! We'll happily give you some basic tips and help you learn more about Unity in general! You'll learn about building applications for the HTC Vive, as well as VR for mobile devices. We'll be using the shared HTC Vive in Electric Perfume to test out our scenes.
What is the HTC Vive?
More than just a headset, the HTC Vive is the only consumer Virtual Reality system that allows the user to walk through a space! In addition, participants of this workshop will also learn some goodies about developing Virtual Reality for mobile! Learn more about the HTC Vive here!
Very basic knowledge of Unity 3D and its interface is required. In other words if you can you open up Unity, Navigate with a Mouse, Import Assets, and have super basic coding knowledge then you're set!
Is there any Pre-Workshop Preparation?
Download Unity 3D 5.4.2 and install it on your machine. This must be done in advance as the download is very large. You may use the Free Version of Unity if you do not wish to purchase a license. When downloading, make sure you check the platforms you want to build to. For example, if you're going to build for an Android phone, select Android as seen in the image below:
What Do I Need For This Workshop?
Bring your own computer as we will not be able to supply any computers, other than a shared one for running the HTC Vive. Windows or OSX are both fine for mobile development. Compatibility with Linux-based machines is untested. Please note, the HTC Vive only works on Windows. If you want to develop VR for iOS / iPhone you must bring a Mac.
Workshop participants are encouraged to bring their own mobile devices that are suitable for VR. Additionally, we encourage you to bring your own VR headsets, Gear VR or Google Daydream are preferred, but as long as your phone supports Google Cardboard we can use that during the class! We will have a Google Cardboard headset to be passed around during class, however, your experience for developing may be improved by having your own!
Workshop Attendance: In the case of the workshop not meeting a minimum amount of attendees, fees will be fully refunded and the workshop will be postponed to a later date. You will be notified the day prior to the date of the workshop if the workshop will be postponed. Limited spaces available, so book soon!
Cancellation Policy: To ensure participant attendance, if you have registered for the workshop you must cancel your booking at least seven days before the workshop for a refund.
